Ukraine is the largest country entirely located in Europe by land area, with approximately 603,628 km² (233,062 sq mi). Its capital and largest city is Kyiv (Київ), one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Eastern Europe.
Geography of Ukraine
Ukraine is situated in Eastern Europe and shares borders with seven countries: Russia (east and northeast), Belarus (north), Poland, Slovakia and Hungary (west), Romania and Moldova (southwest). It has a long coastline on the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in the south.
The country features diverse landscapes: endless steppes in the south, fertile forest-steppe in the central regions, the Carpathian Mountains in the west (highest peak: Hoverla, 2,061 m / 6,762 ft), and the wooded wetlands of Polissya in the north. The main rivers are the Dnipro (Dnieper), Danube, Southern Buh and Siverskyi Donets.
History & Independence
At the beginning of the 20th century Ukraine made several attempts to establish independent statehood, most notably the Ukrainian People’s Republic (1917–1921). Later, most of its territory became part of the Soviet Union.
Ukraine declared independence from the USSR on 24 August 1991. This was overwhelmingly confirmed by a nationwide referendum on 1 December 1991 (more than 90% voted in favor). Since then, 24 August is celebrated annually as Independence Day.

Major Events Since 2014
In 2014, after the Revolution of Dignity (Euromaidan protests), the Russian Federation annexed Crimea — an act not recognized by the majority of the international community and condemned by the United Nations General Assembly. At the same time, parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions (Donbas) came under control of Russian-backed armed groups.
On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine. The war has resulted in massive destruction, millions of displaced people and refugees, and strong international support for Ukraine — including military, financial and humanitarian assistance from dozens of countries.
Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity and right to exist as an independent nation.
